Look Good, Feel Good on National Hair Day

National Hair Day

National Hair Day

Life can’t be perfect, but your hair can. Today is National Hair Day, and to celebrate the power of good locks, we want to explore the reasons why a great head of hair can make us feel like a superhero. The link between hair and wellbeing has been on our minds at Cliphair HQ; for most of us, look good feel good has never been more important. We’d like to take this opportunity to talk about the role of hair and happiness, and the devastating impact of losing it.

Why Does a Good Hair Day Make Us Feel Good?

Feel Good Hair

Most of us aren’t strangers to a good hair day. When your locks tumble in just the right way, or your curls are perfectly bounced, your outlook seems sunnier. However much we try to avoid it, we are vain creatures. When we perceive ourselves as ‘looking good’, our behaviour is impacted for the better. We’re more confident, visibly happier, and comfortable in ourselves. While looking good can certainly affect other people’s opinions of us, the real power lies in our own self-image. Viewing ourselves as attractive or well-presented can unleash an internal superpower. Yes, a good hair day can literally make you a better version of yourself.

The Psychology Behind Look Good Feel Good

Psychology

So, what’s going on inside our brains to cause these positive changes? Researchers at the American Psychological Society have been studying whether looking good truly leads to feeling good. In people over the age of 30, there’s a correlation between looking attractive and being in overall good health.

While beauty is skin deep, to an extent, self-care routines focused on things like exercise, skincare, sleep habits, and beauty can help people feel happier, healthier, and more in control of their daily experiences. Beauty practices, to an extent, are viewed by our brains as self-care, therefore your daily beauty routine can have the same mood-boosting effect as a run or a good night’s sleep.

For this reason, taking the time to care for our locks makes us feel happier and healthier. While we certainly look good on the outside, the real changes are on the inside. Don’t all rush for the hairbrush at once!

What Causes Hair Loss?

Hair Loss

While a good hair day boosts confidence, hair loss causes the opposite. The causes of hair loss are extensive; here are some of the more common ones.

  • Age:
With age, most people notice some hair loss because hair growth slows. At some point, hair follicles stop growing hair, which causes the hair on our scalp to thin. Hair also starts to lose its color.
  • Pregnancy:
Once your little one is born, your hormones rapidly return to normal. Hair that was previously in the growth phase moves rapidly to the telogen (shedding) phase, causing substantial hair loss for over 50% of new moms!
  • Cancer treatment:
If you receive chemotherapy or radiotherapy to your head or neck, you may lose all (or most of) your hair within a few weeks of starting treatment.
  • Hormonal imbalance:
A common cause of this imbalance is polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS). It leads to cysts on a woman’s ovaries, along with other symptoms including hair loss.
  • Alopecia:
Alopecia is a disease that develops when the body’s immune system attacks hair follicles, causing hair loss.
  • Hair Treatments:
If you chemically treat your hair, you could cause hair damage. Over time, this damage can lead to hair loss.
  • Medication:
A possible side effect of some medications is hair loss. If you think this may be the case, talk to your doctor about alternative treatments.

Hair Loss and Confidence

Understandably, losing hair can remove our sense of identity. We feel stressed, sad, and lacking in confidence. “Hair loss not only robs a woman of her sense of style but oftentimes her sense of self-esteem and her security — it can be very devastating,” says Michael Reed, MD, a New York University Medical Center dermatologist who specialises in female pattern hair loss.

Multiple studies have linked hair loss to lowered self-esteem and decreased confidence. A 2019 study in the International Journal of Trichology found that androgenic alopecia lowered men’s quality of life, with a huge impact on areas of self-perception and interpersonal relations. For women, the effect of hair loss on emotional wellbeing is shown to be far higher.

Hair Extensions for Hair Loss

Hair extensions are a great way to mask hair loss and thinning. The range of different types and application methods means you can adjust the amount of hair or application location, without having to wear a wig. If you’re experiencing overall hair loss, you can opt for a full head of extensions. To cover a bald spot, try a top up weft. Over the years, we’ve helped hundreds of women experiencing hair loss to restore their self-esteem. We’ve selected some of our favourite reviews from women we’ve helped to feel more confident.

"I was diagnosed with an underactive thyroid about 14 years ago... since then my hair has just broken and got thinner and more sparce. It has really hit my confidence hard. I bought the double weft hair extensions in #33. It made me feel even better, I was afraid I would look silly for trying too hard but I really was so pleased. It really helped my confidence."

"I am absolutely thrilled with the quality and color match. It is my first-time using extensions and at 51 I more care about having thick hair rather than very long hair. My hairdresser was very impressed with the quality and cut the extensions a couple of inches longer than my hair and it looked like one of my layers and blended in beautifully. I cannot believe that not even my sister realised I had extensions! She just thought my hairdresser did an amazing cut, color and blow dry and kept saying how lovely my hair looked. It has given me much more confidence and I feel, dare I say it, like it has taken 10 years off me! I am recommended Cliphair to everyone. Thank you.."

"After losing some hair this year and now with it thinning I was on the hunt for something to make myself feel more like me. I came across Cliphair and sent over a photo of my hair color for them to match. Heard back within 24 hours with amazing advice and suggestions. Spoke with Abbey on the phone and received further follow up emails with tips from her. I ordered and received within 24 hours. The hair is amazing, blends so well with my own. I haven't perfected adding them in yet, but they are easy to attach. Really, really happy with their service and will definitely use again."
