Getting an elaborate hairstyle to last all day long is no easy feat, especially when there’s dancing, hugging or even bad weather involved! You can be the best wedding hairstylist on the planet but without reinforcement from some good hair products its likely all of your hard work will start to unravel when the evening shenanigans begin. We’ve listed the 11 must have wedding day hairstyling products that should remain in your bridal kit at all times, including how to use them and which styles they are best used on.
Wedding Hair Heat Protectants
Most hair dos for the bride or bridal party will require the use of some heated tools. Whether your using straighteners, curling tongs or a hairdryer its important to protect the hair before using them to shield it from any potential heat damage. Simply spritz the hair from 15cm away with a decent heat protection spray and allow to dry in for 30-60 seconds before applying the heat. Our Cliphair Heat Protection Spray is not only effective against heat damage its also super lightweight so it wont weigh the hair down and it can be combined with other hair products.
Wedding Hair Styling Creams
Styling creams are great for sleek styles whether that’s an up-do or a long, flowy look with hair extensions. They are usually applied to the hair whilst its still wet and dried in for maximum effect. The main job of a styling cream is to help smooth the cuticles in the hair, add moisture and shine and prevent the hair from becoming frizzy. This product is not suitable for a hairstyle that requires curls or lots of volume as its main job is to keep the hair straight.
Wedding Hair Volumizers – Hair Mousse
Volumizing mousse is an absolute essential to create and secure bouncy blow-dries. Not only does it aid in getting volume into the roots as the product dries the hair into shape it will also make sure the style lasts throughout the day from the body on top to the movement on the ends. Apply the mousse all over hair that is 40% dry and use a round brush and hairdryer to dry and style it in. This product is particularly important to use with thin hair and on short hair blow-dries which is also a very popular mother of the bride hairstyle, check out our Mother of the bride look book for more inspiration. The Silhouette flexible hold mousse is a firm salon favourite that keeps the hair in place whilst remaining naturally flexible.
Wedding Hair Volumizers – Volumizing Root Sprays
If your looking for serious volume in the roots a volumizing root spray is the perfect option, especially for thick hair that tends to fall flat easily. This product is sprayed directly onto the roots in thin sections across the hair whilst its still wet and dried in using a blow-dry technique with a round brush, avoid applying to the ends of the hair as it can dry quite rigidly overused. Ideal for use in high volume up dos such as beehives, quiffs and any styles that require serious volume at the front. My personal favourite is the Living Proof Full Root Lift.
Wedding Hair Volumizers – Volumizer Powder For Hair
In the last decade or so, Volumizing hair powers have taken the bridal hair game by storm thanks to their long lasting lift and hold. They work in a very similar way to root sprays however they are used on dry hair instead of wet. This product is fantastic in terms of holding power but take caution when applying as too much can quickly turn into a stiff, sticky mess which is extremely hard to remove without washing the hair, our best advice is to practice using it before the big day and use small amounts as you go on. The Got2be Styling Powder is one of my favourites not only for functionality but at £5.50 its an absolute bargain too!
Hair Pomade For Women
Pomade has been used on women’s hair for decades by hairdressers, however its only in recent years that it has become more widely known and used at home thanks to the rising trend of snatched, slicked back hair. More and more brides are opting for sleek low bun looks paired with a parting on their wedding days and these simply cannot be perfected without the use of a little styling pomade. The waxlike texture combined with a small headed backcombing brush thoroughly smooths flyaway hairs and stops them from getting out of place again, it also adds a delicate shine to the hair without looking false like a gel might. Our favourite pomade has got to be from ‘Ouai’, at £20 per small tub it’s a little pricey but its worth it for the staying power and beautiful scent.
Bridal Hair Texture Sprays
Boho wedding hair would not be complete without a spritz of texture spray to finish and lock in the look. It can be used to add texture and dimension to all manner of styles from long, rustic fishtail braids to beachy waves and ponytails. After the style is complete the hair texture spray is used to add movement and definition to the hair whilst still remaining completely workable. Bridal Hair Sprays – Medium Hold Hairspray
Some would argue that a good hairspray is the most important weapon in any bridal stylists hair kit, and I would have to agree as its used on pretty much every hairstyle whether that’s up or down. There are many different strength options for hairsprays available from lightweight to extra strong, as a wedding hair stylist its absolutely vital to have both strong and loose versions. Medium hold hairsprays are perfect for use when you are building your hair ups such as buns, ponytails and half up half down looks as it will hold your work in place but remain flexible if you should need to change it.
Bridal Hair Sprays – Extra Strong Hairspray
As well as your medium hold hair spray an extra strong one is just as useful. For hair that is limp, very soft or has a tendency to lose volume and curl easily an extra strong spray makes all the difference. Best used on elaborate up-dos or tight curls that require extra staying power, spray onto the hair from around 15-20cm away when you are completely happy with the style you have created. Avoid using strong hairsprays before the look is complete as they dry much more rigid which will make the hair trickier to move and style if you need to change it. Got2bes Glued Basting Freeze Spray is up there with one of the best and at only £5.50 you cant go wrong.
Wedding Hair Shine Enhancers
Shine sprays are the perfect finishing product for almost all hair styles on a wedding day, they are especially useful on blonde hair which tends to lack a natural shimmer. They have virtually no hold and should only be used at the very end to give a delicate sheen to the hair. Our Cliphair Moisture Shine Spray doubles up as a shine spray aswell as a frizz eliminator. Simply spritz the hair from 20cm away once the styling is complete.
Wedding hair serums
Serums are used to reduce frizz, add shine and smooth flyway’s on the mid-lengths and ends of the hair. It can be used on any hair down style from Hollywood waves to straight and sleek looks to reduce any fuzziness and prevent frizz from forming later on in the day. Its best to build serums onto the hair rather than applying in one go as some are heavier than others, start with a small pump and completely rub into your hands before applying to ensure the hair does not become greasy. You can always add more if you need but you cannot take it off once its there!
Conclusion
All of the products above will ensure all the hard work and effort you put into your bride or bridesmaids hair on the big day will last the long haul and look fabulous!
