Mum’s deserve that extra special bit of love on Mother’s Day because…well, it’s mum. But as we come up to Mother’s Day amid current concerns around coronavirus, most people are stuck for ideas on how to celebrate, especially in the time of social distancing and self-isolation. So, to help you say thank you to that special lady in your life, we’ve compiled a list of how to let her know you care, even when you can’t be with her.

While many countries have different rules and advice in place, the general advice across the globe is to avoid “unnecessary contact” with friends and family, and people should practice social distancing – meaning if your plans for Mother’s Day were to go to a gathering, a pub or a restaurant, they should immediately be cancelled or postponed.

It's especially important to remember that the elderly are most vulnerable at this time, which unfortunately means to keep the safe, we must keep away. However, it doesn’t mean that we can’t make them feel special this Mother’s Day.

The rapid changes we are facing during the coronavirus make this a challenging time for us all, but we know that a thoughtful gesture goes a long way so whether it’s mum, grandma or auntie, here’s how to celebrate Mother’s Day while staying safe.

    1. Send Letters and Cards

Royal Mail and the Public Health England (PHE) have advised that it’s safe to send Mother’s Day cards without risking contracting or spreading the coronavirus. Many mail delivery companies, including Royal Mail, have removed taking signatures using hand-held devices in order to avoid spreading the virus.

To add an extra special touch to your Mother’s Day message, write a letter instead. As the world navigates through such uncertain times, there’s no better time to pen your emotions to loved ones. Receiving a personal letter is now a rare treat and will make a special surprise. Not only that but this may give you a chance to be thoughtful and express your feelings better than a simple card, text or even in a real-life setting.

It’s also important to remember that, naturally, there will be some delays with deliveries, so the sooner you post your cards, the quicker they’ll arrive.

    2. Give the Gift of Food

Top 6 Things to Make Mother's Day Special this Year

Due to the uncertain nature of the coronavirus, many people have gone into panic mode; supermarket shelves are empty and getting food groceries is now difficult. And since we are being strongly advised to stay indoors and avoid places like restaurants, getting food is a major concern most of us are facing every day. So, on Mother’s Day, surprise your mum with a food takeaway delivery from her favourite local restaurants?

Send your mum or a loved one their favourite dish for them to enjoy in the comfort of their home via food delivery services like Deliveroo and UberEats. The NHS has stated that it is very unlikely that COVID-19 can be spread through food, but it is still important to take additional precautions, which is why some food delivery apps have implemented ‘contact-free delivery’ which limits contact when delivering orders will help keep everyone healthy. So, you have a peace of mind, your driver/ rider will leave the food at the recipient’s door rather than handing it over to them.

As well as food from restaurants and takeaways, you can also order kitchen and household products from local stores and supermarkets via apps like Deliveroo, which we are certain it will make her feel loved and thought of.

Although this one may be a little complicated for the ones not particularly tech-savvy, this new add on will certainly keep families and friends entertained, no matter how far they are from one another.

Earlier this week, Google Chrome announced a new add on in which you can coordinate Netflix watch parties while quarantined, so if you’re apart, you can all watch your series or movies at the same time and simultaneously chat online throughout whatever you're watching. Syncing playback means that you'll be starting and ending a movie at exactly the same time as your friends.

It’s easy to set up, all you will need to do is install the free Google Chrome add-on on your browser, play a TV show or movie on Netflix and launch the launch the add-on and send the URL to whoever you want, no matter where they are. Whoever you send the link to (must be a Netflix user) will automatically be redirected to the streaming service’s website, allowing everyone with access to the link to watch the episode or movie at the same time discuss using the real-time sidebar chat, all from the comfort of your own homes.

    4. Personalised Gifts and Flowers

As mentioned above, a lot of delivery companies have introduced contact-free delivery, which will offer a peace of mind and protection for everyone during this anxiety-filled period. With delivery drivers being instructed to place gifts and cards in a safe location or standing two metres back while the recipient opens the door – even sending and receiving flowers safe.

If you wish to add a personal touch, you should get in contact with your chosen brand or shop and see if they can accommodate your request as many companies work hard to make Mother’s Day special amid the coronavirus pandemic.

As flowers are popular for Moher’s Day, you should remember that certain stems may be unavailable due to supplier shortages as we are increasing being advised to stay in as much as possible. In this case, get in touch with the florist of your choice and check if they can create something special on your behalf using a mix of their very best in-store stems.
